With several players missing, the midfield was threadbare and a toothless attack resulted in yet another loss, the team's second in three games. With just 1 point from a possible 9, and the increasing speculation over the continued presence of midfield kingpin Shawal, the Reds found themselves on the backfoot for the entire 90 minutes. After 30mins of sustained pressure, the Jonathan of the Rangers was sent tumbling in the box as he raced goalwards after picking up a through pass played to him. The 'keeper raced out to collect but sent the striker tumbling as he cut past him, a clear infringement that resulted in a penalty. Neatly put away, it gave the Rangers a much deserved lead which was consolidated just before half time after a strike down the right flank found its way into the back of the net.

2 goals to the good, the Rangers were caught off guard in the second half when the Reds blitzed attack after attack, turning up the tempo of the game in search of a comeback. With Ivan switching to 'keeper and Fadli taking on outfield responsibility, the move looked to have at least provided some cover in the midfield region. Racing into the box, the 'keeper-turned-midfielder found himself floored by a horrendous challenge, earning a penalty which Zhenghan converted from the spot with a deft chip. 2 - 1 and with every chance of a fightback, the Reds found themselves unable to find that elusive second goal which would at least salvage the respectability of a draw. The Rangers contented themselves with sitting deep and hitting on the counter, a tactic which almost succeeded if not for several spectacular saves from the substitute 'keeper. Ending 2 - 1, in favour of the Rangers, the result was by and large a fair one giving the Reds something to mull over before their next encounter.

Man of the Match: Jonathan Lau

Aevylain Reds V.S. Air Force United
2 - 2

Coming back off the recent defeat, and a defeat by such a large margin, at the hands of Ghim Moh Alumni, was never going to be an easy task but one that the Reds pulled off gloriously. Dominating the game from start to finish against more seasoned opposition, the most suprising thing at the end of the match was likely to be the scoreline given that the Reds had several goals denied them due to dubious offside calls. Given the lack of proper match officiating, however, it is a scoreline that the Reds are willing to accept only because they firmly knew who were the victors of Marina South Pitch 2 on the 18th of February 2006.

With the skipper starting his first game for the Reds since the 15th of October, the defensive partnership between the two centerbacks was finally restored. With star striker Wong Keng also returning from injury, the Reds looked a rejuvenated side, boosted by the return of the 2 senior squad members. Barring an early defensive slip up which saw the challengers, AFU, going 1 - 0 up within the opening 5 minutes, the Reds dominted the other 85 mintues of play replying almost instantly with a strike from forward Gabriel to restore parity. Between the second half dynamite strike by left winger Andrew to give the Reds a 2 - 1 lead, and the first goal, various other goals were ruled as offside in what can only be described as questionable referreeing. A late offside equalizer, somehow standing when it should have been obviously disallowed, salvaged what would have been a humiliating defeat for AFU.

Man of the Match:

Russell Kang

The substitute striker emulated the fighting spirit of the Reds
and never let up for even a moment. Putting in countless challenges
and taking his chances (scoring and subsequently having his goals
disallowed) has earned him this Man of the Match Award. On a day
that that every member of the squad was on form, the youngster
definitely let his quality show.

In the latest transfer news, Tiong Bahru FC has expressed interest in signing midfield kingpin Shawal Rosly, prying him away from the Reds outfit. Though details are still sketchy, the NFL team has confirmed its interest in the player, stating that such a signing would greatly increase their chances of winning the league and thus gaining promotion into the S-League.

Both player and manager were seen in deep discussion at Breko's along the trendy Holland Road district though both declined comment when approached. A day later, the Reds skipper issued an official statement to the media in a bid to quell any rumour mongering.

"I had a very honest talk with the player just this evening and he expressed nothing but confidence in the club. He also categorically denied any rumours that he has been unhappy with the performance of the squad and quashed any doubt that has had trouble fitting in," said Alex.

"However it is only realistic that he seriously consider the offer by Tiong Bahru FC as they are a first rate club and he (Shawal) is a player with a bright future," conceded the skipper when further questioned as to the permanency of the stand-in captain.

"All I can say is that he has the club's very best interest at heart, and vice versa. If his future lies elsewher then we will not stand in the way. Though of course we would very much like for him to remain."

Club Announcement

Zhenwen has been named as the second vice-captain of the Aevylain Reds.

Aevylain Reds V.S Yellow Submarines
9 - 3

Bouncing back from a 2 - 1 defeat in a closed door, training match on the 17th of December, the Reds stormed to victory with a trouncing of Yellow Submarines in this third and final encounter with the youth side on the eve of 2006, ending the year on a high note. Though missing the security of a regular keeper and a defense that was downright porous, the Reds clearly embraced the ideal that the best defense is a strong offense.

Securing a hat-trick of goals and 2 assists, Zhenghan consolidated his position as top scorer of the club and establishing himself as the Reds' point man with 8 goals from 7 games. After clearly establishing their dominance of the game in the opening 20 minutes, it was left-back Rupen who struck first with a curling strike from near the halfway mark. The stunning strike was followed in magnificent fashion by left-winger Shijie and forward Zhenghan each finding the back of the back of the net to put the home side 3 - 0 up before the half time whistle.

Entering the second half with a comfortable lead, the Reds were shell-shocked as early defensive errors resulted in the redundancy of their first half efforts. Conceding 3 goals, one of which was an own goal, within the opening 15 minutes, the Reds were temporarily stunned into silence as the opposition cruised to parity. The game, however, was still very much for the taking and it was the home team that refused to be beaten. A mesmerizing run from midfielder Jon Lau saw penetrate the opponents' defensive line, cutting back to send a low ball across the face of goal with right wing Russell looking to tuck it home. A desperate slide from the opposition defender, however, ended up clearing the ball into the back of his own net to give the Reds the lead.

Once again establishing the lead, all doubt in the win vanished as Shawal produced the best of the match (and possibly of the entire campaign), with an unstoppable soaring right footed strike on the left side of the area, securing a 5 - 3 lead. Left-wing forward Gabriel (formerly of the Holland Knights) scored on his debut before assisting the final goal of the match. A swerving cross from the right side saw Shawal score yet another beauty as his head rose to meet the ball. At 7 - 3, and splendid strikes all round, the Reds put on a confident display of attacking football and showed the grit to not be overcome by the second half barrage from the opposition.

In the post match interview, skipper Alex had the following to say:

"I think today showed what I've always believed, that we have a side of quality and lads willing to play their hearts out for the club."

"Though the senior players secured the win today and certainly put on a fine display, I was particularly impressed with the younger players...like Christian who embodied the fighting spirit of the team. I never saw a challenged being shirked or a loose ball not being chased after today and that's what really constitutes a good game."

"I played Jon Lau today in the center of the park beside Shawal, as opposed to the wing as I believe he has the quality to play in a central role as well as along the flanks. Moving him into the center also allows me to field some of the younger players along the wings," responding to a queries about changes to the team line up.

When asked about concession of 3 goals early in the second half, the skipper deliberated for a moment before giving his thoughts.

"I think the defence will definitely be asking questions of themselves. Pairing the youth and talent possessed by youngster Zhenwen opposite veteran, defence-leader Ivan in the center of defence will certainly require sometime before they are accustomed to playing alongside one another. Still, I think that they performed admirably barring the goal-rush in the second half."

Man of the Match:

Shawal

Click here to download the latest team news from Aevylain SportsTV, as presented by James Tan, team correspondant.

An alternative download site can be found here.

Aevylain Reds v.s Yellow Submarines
4 - 2

Picking up their second win in 4 matches so far, the Reds sunk the Yellow Submarines at Cantonment, never doubtful of the win. Scoring midway through the first half, Zhenghan tucked home the asisst from the flanks to put the homeside one up before the break. Zhenghan, a player who initially struggled to find his most suitable position in the squad, ended all debate when he scored a quick second just after the restart. Already 2 - 0 up, the opposition showed their determination not to be overwhelmed, replying with a strike from within the box, and pulled one back. Despite the mounting fightback, Zhenghan capped off an inspirational performance by completing a hat-trick, a firmly struck volley from outside the box beating the Subs 'keeper with ease to re-instate the 2 goal advantage.

3 - 1 up and looking to seize the win comfortably, the Reds were punished for their overconfidence when another six-yard effort found its way into the back of their net. With just a goal between them, both teams stepped up their game and with emotions running high, tackles came in fast and furious. With the skipper picking up an early injury, the Reds midfield engine Shawal took the leadership of the team squarely upon his shoulders. A fantastic solo effort down the left flank was followed by a spectacular finish to cap the 4 - 2 victory. With an almost perfect game, the Reds day was marred with 2 players picking up injuries in the first half and a defence that seemed to be shaky at times.

10 minutes from the start of the first half, Reds centre-back Alex attempted a defensive header clearance only to land awkwardly on his left foot. Going to ground immediately clutching his knee, the skipper had to be stretchered off to the sidelines. 5 minutes later, star striker Wong Keng looked to have cut himself through on goal and looked to finish the penetrating run with a strike. A horrendous late tackle from behind by Subs centreback Zhenwen saw none of the ball but all of Keng's right ankle as the striker went to ground, unable to recover on his own power. Having just returned from international duty, the injury came as a blow to the young ace who had to content himself watching the game from the sidelines beside Alex.

Medical reviews immediately after the game revealed that neither player suffered fractures though ligament damage has not been ruled out. With the Reds just starting to come together as a team, this will be a blow to the players who had worked hard to get their match fitness. With the victory now behind them, these two players will now have to triumph over their new opponent, injury.

Man of the Match (nominations):

Shawal / Zhenghan

With only 2 obvious choices, Zhenghan or Shawal, the
decision was not an easy one given that the former had
completed a stunning hat-trick. Shawal, stand-in skipper,
however, was the heart and soul of the midfield, contributing
to the scoreline with an amazing solo effort to confirm the
victory. His contributions to the overall defence and attack
over the past 2 games has deservedly earned him
this privelege.

Look out for the result in the coming days!

Impasse at Cantonment

Missing 5 first teamers, out through either suspension or injury, the encounter with the Raffles Rangers was never expected to be an easy one. Having just come off from a 3 - 2 defeat, the Reds were anxious to put the defeat behind them and focus entirely upon getting all three points in the bag. It was clear from the onset that the visiting team enjoyed a majority of the possession and created most of the attacking chances whilst the Reds valiantly fought off the Raffles onslaught, who were unlucky not to have snuck at least one goal in by half time. Still, the scoreline stood a respectable 0 - 0 at half time, both teams making use of the break to re-organize and find a way to end the deadlock.

Though the rain began to come down, the weather did nothing to dampen the spirit of the players as the second half began with as much energy as the first. With several changes having been made, the most noticeable being the introduction of Calvin as a left winger and Shijie being pushed up to attack alongside Zhenghan, the Reds' attacking play went up a few notches, occasionally threatening the opponents' goal. In the final 10 minutes, it looked as though the Reds might have just stolen the victory from the Rangers, who had up to that point still mantained a majority of possession. Joshua pushed past the centre back before calmly lobbing the 'keeper, the lifted shot goalbound. Zhenghan looked to have confirmed the strike before a goal line clearance by the recovering defender.

All in all, a well played match and a hard earned draw. 4 points from 3 matches and the Reds go marching ON ON ON!

Man of the Match:

Joshua

      Painful but absolutely Essential
The title sums up what I believe was the lesson to have been learnt from Saturday's defeat. The game which took place under the searing hot afternoon sun saw our team beaten 3 - 2 by a youth side, amicably called the Yellow Submarines, which showed passion and the drive to win. Whilst the failings of the team should be brought to light, it is with great pleasure that I discuss the strength displayed by the opposition who were 5 years our junior. Each and every individual committed his entire effort to the team, chasing down every ball and packing the defence, choking our forwards thus giving them little chance on goal. Tackles and challenges were aplenty, even if a good number of them were mistimed and badly executed. Still, it demonstrated the grit that the youths possessed in wanting to prove something to both their opponents and themselves.

Being caught badly off-guard, the opposition established a 2 - 0 advantage early on in the first half, scoring from a free-kick and subsequently from open play. To the Reds' credit, the fight back saw them earn a penalty, sweetly converted by Wong Keng, and strike from Roger that went down the center, putting the teams level at 2 - 2 by the break. At half-time, the Reds' saw their squad depleted with the departure of 2 players and thus began the second half with a 9-men squad. Under the pressure of the heat and the hard Mountbatten ground, several players found themselves unequal to the physical challenge of the game with cramps ensuing. With 35 mins left on the clock, the Reds were boosted with the arrival of the team star defender, Ivan, who arrived to shore up the defensive line.

Nonetheless, 10 minutes from time, a splended solo effort from the opposition right winger saw him cut past the defence and down the right flank to slide an inviting pass across the goal mouth. The tap-in finish was as easy as they come with the Subs captain, Jia Yi, hitting the back of the net to put his team ahead. With the very real threat of defeat looming in the distance, the Reds pressed on urgently in a vain attempt to at least finish level. Showing true character, the opposition's defence thwarted all attempts on goal to hold out for what was surely a deserved win against purportedly tougher opposition.

Man of the Match:

Tianhao

The Reds won their debut game against HPU (Hokkien Peng United) 4 - 3 at the Yishun Ring pitch. The following is the full match write up:

In preparation for the beginning of the new Espzen league season next year, the newly formed team, yet to be named, played its first friendly today. In what was a match that can only be described as thrilling, the team managed to snatch a 4 - 3 victory in its debut game with Wong Keng completing a stunning hat trick and Roger scoring late in the second half to snatch the win. Unfortunately, the game came to an unexpected and abrupt end when the opposing team decided that they were looking for a fight instead of a soccer game. Making an executive decision, I called an end to what had been, up to then, a fantastic chance to interact and interplay with this new team.

Something of a diamond in the rough, I was slightly uncertain of what to expect of Gerald who made his field debut between the posts for us. It was not long before I realized that the guy was a goddamn natural...knowing exactly when to come out and having excellent shot-stopping ability. The moment he has gotten more experience and worked on his goal-kick, we will have the Manchester United equilavent of Van Der Sar in between the posts for us. Ian who started off as sweeper was initially uncomfortable with the role but showed his defensive ability and stopping power. I believe that once Ivan recovers from his injury and resumes his sweeper role allowing Ian to move up to stopper, our defence will find itself in pole position to break down any attack.

Our midfield displayed the grit and discipline that was required of them with Jon Lau and Shijie providing excellent stability, backed by Zhenghan who covered defensive midfield duties to give them the neccessary cover. Russell, a youth player with the Holland Knights, filled in as a makeshift right back displaying a tenacity that easily outplayed opponents more than 5 years his senior and virtually twice his size, whilst Tianhao's non-stop heckling of strikers down the right back ensured that the defence had more than enough time to re-organize to meet the oncoming threat. As for the forwards, the scoreline speaks for itself with Wong Keng smashing in a hat-trick and Roger putting in the winning strike. Jonathan who relentlessly pushed down the left flank skipped past markers to ensure that our offensive penetration was never in doubt.

As for me...I partnered Ian in defence as stopper today but am glad that I was a part of a team that displayed discipline, organisation and integrity...qualities that outstrip talent anyday (though it's advisable to have a fair portion of that too...thankfully we have that as well :)

Man of the Match:

Wong Keng
